Sea trips are available from the harbour, and coarse fishing can be enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere. The Forge Valley Woodland Nature Reserve is half a mile on foot, or there are quiet lanes leading up to Langdale Forest directly from the cottages. Golf and riding are available locally. Within 20 miles are the historic houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard. The inviting moorland countryside of 'Heartbeat' fame, Robin Hood's Bay and the old port of Whitby are within easy reach.
